The three beats of a usable backstory
Origin answers what shaped their values: family, place, class. The turning point is the event that pushed them out of ordinary life. The present is where they are when the story begins, and what is still unresolved. Leave at least one question unanswered: a backstory that ties everything up gives your GM or your plot nothing to do.

How long should a character backstory be?
For a tabletop character, half a page is plenty: where they came from, the event that set them on this path, and one unresolved thread for the GM. For a novel, write more for yourself than will ever appear on the page, and reveal it in fragments.
