Fantasy race name generators
Each race has its own sound. Elvish names flow, dwarven names clang, orc names growl. These generators follow those rules:
What makes a character name work
Sound matches personality. Hard consonants (k, g, t) feel tough and abrupt; soft ones (l, m, s) feel gentle or elegant. Linguists call this sound symbolism, and the famous "bouba/kiki" experiment shows most people link rounded sounds with round shapes and sharp sounds with spiky ones.
Distinct on the page. Readers skim. Avoid giving two characters names with the same first letter or the same number of syllables.
Grounded in a culture. Decide where the family comes from. Surnames built from places (Ashford), jobs (Carver) or epithets (Moonwhisper) tell a mini-story.

Questions
How do I pick a good character name?
Say it out loud, check it is not already a famous character, and make sure it looks different from your other characters' names on the page (different first letter and syllable count). The best names hint at origin, class or personality without spelling it out.
Are these names unique?
Names are built from syllables and name parts, so the generator produces thousands of combinations, but it does not check trademarks or existing books. Search any name you plan to publish.
Can I get fantasy race names, like elf or dwarf names?
Yes. The race name generators below have their own sound rules for elves, dwarves, orcs, humans, halflings, gnomes, tieflings and dragonborn, with naming notes for each.
Where are my kept names stored?
Starred names are saved in your browser's local storage on this device only. Use Clear to remove them.
