A simple formula for the bio paragraph

Who they are + a contradiction. "Idris keeps strangers alive for a living and keeps everyone else at arm's length."

What they want. One concrete goal, in plain words.

The trouble. End on the event that threatens the goal, so the reader wants to know what happens next.

For a deeper workup use the full character profile template; to find the want, need and flaw use the personality generator; for a polished paragraph from your notes use the character description generator.

Questions

What is a character bio?

A character bio is the short version of a character: who they are, what they want and what stands in their way, usually in one paragraph plus a few key facts. It is what you would put on a wiki page, a pitch document or a cast list.

How long should a character bio be?

Three to five sentences for the paragraph, plus a handful of facts (name, age, occupation, look, flaw, want). If it runs past 150 words, move the extra detail into a full character profile.

How do I write a good character bio?

Open with what they do and one contradiction, then say what they want, then end on the trouble that is coming. Write it like a back-cover blurb: present tense, specific, no list of adjectives.

Can I print or export it?

Yes. "Printable PDF" gives a blank sheet before you type; after that it exports what you filled in. "Copy" puts plain text on your clipboard for Google Docs, Notion or Word.
