How to use a random character (without it feeling random)
Random tables are a tradition in tabletop games for a reason: they force you out of your defaults. The trick is to treat each roll as a question, not an answer.
- Connect two lines. Why would a loyal smuggler have a secret debt? The answer is your backstory.
- Keep the strangest detail. The quirk or look that made you laugh is the thing readers will remember.
- Make the want and need collide. The gap between what a character wants and what they need is the engine of their arc. The personality generator explains how it works.

What is an OC generator?
OC means "original character", a character you invent rather than borrow from an existing story. An OC generator gives you a random starting point (name, species, role, look, personality, secret) that you then make your own.
How do the locks work?
Lock any line you like and press Reroll: only the unlocked lines change. It is the fastest way to keep a name you love while you shop for a better flaw or secret.
Is the random character generator really random?
Each character comes from a seed number shown on the card. The same seed and genre always give the same character, so you can share or revisit one. Press Reroll for a fresh seed.
Can I turn a random character into a full profile?
Yes. Press "Expand with AI" and the character is sent to our AI model, which writes appearance, voice, backstory and story hooks around the traits you rolled. You can also paste it into the character profile template.
