Why rolled stats beat the standard array (on average)

Rolling four six-sided dice and dropping the lowest pushes results upward, because the worst die never counts. Compare it with plain 3d6, the method from the earliest editions. These bars are the exact probabilities, computed from every possible roll.

4d6 drop lowest: average 12.24   3d6: average 10.50   Standard array: average 12.00

4d6 drop lowest: 23.1% · 3d6: 9.3%

So rolling gives you a slightly stronger character on average (about 73 total points versus 72 for the array), but with real risk: roughly one roll in ten is a 7 or lower. Point buy trades that gamble for control, which is why many organised-play groups use it.

Questions

Which ability score method should I use?

Ask your DM first. Standard array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) is fair and fast. Point buy (27 points, scores 8 to 15 before bonuses) gives control with the same power level for everyone. Rolling 4d6 and dropping the lowest die averages about 12.24 per score, higher than the array, but swings widely.

How are ability modifiers calculated?

Subtract 10 from the score, divide by 2 and round down. A 15 gives +2, a 10 gives +0 and an 8 gives -1. Modifiers, not raw scores, are what you add to rolls.

Where do racial ability bonuses go?

In the 2014 Player's Handbook each race had fixed bonuses. Since Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, and in the 2024 rules where the bonuses come from your background, most tables let you put +2 in one score and +1 in another. This generator uses that flexible +2 / +1 and places it on your class's priorities.

How is hit point maximum at level 1 worked out?

Your class hit die maximum plus your Constitution modifier. A wizard (d6) with CON 14 starts with 6 + 2 = 8 hit points; a barbarian (d12) with the same CON starts with 14.

Can it write my D&D backstory?

Yes: press "Write backstory with AI" under the sheet, or use the dedicated character backstory generator for more control over tone and hooks.
